Everything You Need to Know About Botox

What is Botox?

Botox injections are shots that use “botulinum toxin” which is a neurotoxin used to prevent a muscle from moving for a limited period of time. Botox is commonly used on wrinkles in the forehead, around the eyes or smile lines.

There are different types of neuromodulators on the market which include; Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau. Our clinic offers Botox and Dysport. All 4 use the “botulinum toxin” we mention above; however the difference lies in how long they last and how large of an area they affect.

How can I prepare?

If this is your first time getting a botox injection or you are unsure on whether you are a good candidate for botox, we highly suggest booking a consultation with Dr.Joe. You can do so by visiting our Contact Us page.

Before getting a botox injection, please make sure you:

  • Don’t have an allergy to the botulinum toxin, or allergy to cow’s milk protein
  • Are NOT pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Don’t have certain neuromuscular conditions, such as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease
  • Are above 18 years old

If you are on any blood thinner medication, we highly recommend you speak to your healthcare provider before getting a botox injection.

What is the procedure like?

To begin the procedure, the doctor will clean your skin and inject the botox with a very fine needle. Most patients do not require any numbing to the area as the procedure is very bearable.

Your dosage will depend on the strength of your muscles as well as the area that is affected.

What is recovery like?

There may be slight swelling after the procedure but it typically goes away in 1-2 days. Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours and avoid laying down for 4 hours after getting your botox injection.

In most cases, you can resume your day to day activities right after treatment.

If you are experiencing any discomfort, apply a cold compress or take a Tylenol to reduce any swelling or pain. Any discomfort should subside within 24 hours.

When will I see results?

Typically you will see results within 1 to 3 days after your treatment however sometimes it can take up to two weeks.  Depending on the area you treated, the effect of botox will typically last 3 to 5 months.

Overall, botox is a great option if you are looking for a quick and non-invasive treatment. Whether you choose this option as a form of prevention or treatment for your wrinkles, we are here to consult with you every step of the way.
